Thanks to the graciousness of batu maung, I got my hand on a copy of Balls of Fury. I needed some haha stuff to brighten up my day so I thought this would be the perfect antidote to fix that. It's high time someone did a movie on ping pong piang.

Story goes : Disgraced child table tennis prodigy, tries to make a comeback after 15 years hiatus. Throw in a sub-plot on underground triads, back alley ping pong tournaments, and a whole gamut of insane characters, and you pretty much have an idea what this whole movie is about.

Balls of Fury doesn't exactly have much depth in terms of a storyline, but at least there's still some, compared to other shitty low-brow comedies like Meet The Spartans and Superhero Movie.

I'm damn glad the directors decided leave out the gross-out humour which is so popular in Hollywood nowadays, and substituting it with situational humour instead. Movies like Don't Mess With the Zohan leaves a bad aftertaste IMHO.

The pros :

• Def Leppard overfloweth. How many movies have an extensive Def Leppard soundtrack?!
• Christopher Walken looks absolutely ridiculous.
• James Hong was hillarious as Master Wong.
• The delectable Maggie Q in it! She can star in Hiburan Minggu Ini and I'd still watch it...
• Jason Scott Lee.
• The German rival character is an absolute gem.
• Male courtesans??!? WTF??? But still funny.

The cons :

• I'm Chinese, but of the banana kind, and yet I was still insulted by the way the directors treated the Chinese culture. MAKE UP YOUR MIND ON WHETHER U WANNA USE CHINESE OR JAPANESE REFERENCES; DON'T MIX THE TWO UP.
• The jokes/puns gets dreary sometimes. But it picks right up the next minute.
• Masi Oka's cameo is totally wasted in the movie.
